Mark Mclean’s PlayGround (TO)

Jazz fans love the sound of this drummer. A 1940s groove lying at the base, polyrhythmic touches making the top stand out and tasteful brushwork colouring all of the rest — these are the lauded quali- ties of Canadian drummer Mark McLean. His classy approach and quiet intensity have made him one of today’s most sought after jazz drummers, having worked with artists like Oscar Peterson and Quincy Jones. Now, as composer and band leader, McLean is on tour under his own name. He steps out from behind the singers with whom he is most associ- ated — such as last year’s headline performer Molly Johnson — to showcase his own music. Self-described as neo-bop — a mix of jazz, funk, Latin rhythms and traditional swing — McLean’s own compositions are making new waves.
